Responding to Web Job postings is a fool’s errand.  Hundreds of people send in their resumes for each post.  So what unique things can be done when in transition?  Mr. Decker reviewed several such ideas.

Unique Search Strategies:

*  Griffin Letter:  Send your network a letter asking for their help getting into see someone at your targeted companies.

*  Bear & Pizza Search:  Invite 3 – 5 mentors/references to come and brain storm a plan for you to go about getting your next position.

*  Job Posting Strategy:  Disregard the posting “rules.”  Call marketing or investor relations and get info on the company;  find an insider or outsider (BOD, Auditor, Vendor, Customer) who can get you to the hiring manager.

*  Think in Reverse:  What keeps the CEO awake at night (Increasing Enterprise Value), so show him/her how you’ve done that in the past and can do it again.

*  Trojan Horse:  People like to help and talk.  So give them a list of 30 – 50 companies and ask them for ideas on how to get into them (do not ask for a job).  Or write a white paper on a concept they’d be interested in and go get their feedback.

*  Problem Search (i.e. not Job Search):  If you were a consultant, what is the one big/best problem that you could solve for the target company?  What symptoms would there be that that problem is present, and who would notice those symptoms?

*  Other:  Start a business.   Help Others (they may return the favor someday).

Go to a Career Fair to get names of target employees to network with.

Form a help group of other folks in transition to share ideas and support.
